As Cameroon prepares to celebrate Youth Day on February 11th, Sacred Heart College in Bonaberi Rial, Douala, has been busy promoting bilingualism, unity, and cultural diversity among its students.
The college’s Youth week activities kicked off with a holy Mass on campus, followed by a gastronomy event where different classes showcased traditional meals from across the country. According to Peter Che Nagfack, Chairman of the college, the events are designed to promote unity, integration, and cultural diversity among the students.

“The activities started with a holy Mass on campus, and yesterday, we had a gastronomy event where students showcased traditional meals from different regions of Cameroon,” Nagfack said. “Today, we are showcasing different talents, and it’s been a wonderful celebration so far.”

The college is also using the occasion to promote bilingualism among its students as was the case this Friday, February 8, which happens to be the national day for the promotion and use of Cameroon’s two official languages English and French. Nagfack explained that the college has a bilingualism club that operates throughout the academic year, and students are encouraged to speak both English and French.
“We believe that bilingualism is key to promoting unity and cultural diversity among our students,” Nagfack said. “By speaking both English and French, our students can communicate effectively with each other and with people from different backgrounds.”
However, Nagfack also highlighted the challenges the college faces in tackling delinquency among its students. He explained that the administration is working hard to communicate with parents to handle delinquency, and that inclusive dialogue with parents, teachers, and students is key to addressing the issue.
“Fighting delinquency is a collective responsibility, and we are working hard to ensure that our students behave well and respect each other’s differences,” Nagfack said.

This 59th edition of National Youth Day is distinguished by a particularly meaningful theme: ‘Youth, Maturity, and Responsibility for the Consolidation of Peace, Security, Economic Growth, and the Democratic Process’.
The college’s efforts to promote bilingualism, unity, and cultural diversity are in line with the government’s objectives for Youth Day. As Cameroon celebrates its youth, Sacred Heart College is leading the way in promoting values that are essential for building a united and harmonious society.
