In a country where unemployment continues to challenge thousands of young graduates, one man chose not to surrender to frustration. Instead, he transformed rejection into purpose, vision into action, and struggle into opportunity for many others.
Dr. Meh Basil Kum, a proud son of Esu in Menchum Division of Cameroon’s Northwest Region, is today widely recognized as a physiotherapist, researcher, lecturer, institution builder, and youth empowerment advocate. But behind his growing success story lies a journey marked by hardship, resilience, and determination.

Born in Wum on May 5th and raised between Wum and Esu, Dr. Meh lost his father at a very young age. Despite the difficult circumstances, he remained committed to education and personal growth. Raised by a nurse, he developed an early passion for healthcare and community service — a motivation that would later shape his professional path.
After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences and a Master’s degree in Physiotherapy from the University of Dschang, Dr. Meh entered the job market with high hopes. Like many young Cameroonians, he applied for opportunities in both the public and private sectors, but doors remained closed.

Rather than giving up, he chose to think differently.
Having worked in the healthcare field for about four years after his Master’s degree, Dr. Meh observed several realities affecting the sector: the shortage of healthcare professionals, lack of practical training, and limited innovation in education. These experiences inspired him to create solutions instead of waiting endlessly for employment.
In 2019, driven by passion and vision, he founded STEM Higher Institute in Douala — an institution aimed at training future professionals through practical, skill-based, and innovation-driven education.

What began as a personal initiative to create employment for himself gradually became a platform that now impacts and employs many Cameroonians. Through STEM Higher Institute, young people are trained in health sciences, engineering, business, agriculture, education, and vocational studies, with strong emphasis placed on entrepreneurship and real-world problem solving.
For Dr. Meh, education is not only about obtaining certificates; it is about creating opportunities and empowering communities. Over the years, he has offered scholarships and financial subventions to underprivileged students, helping many young people access higher education despite economic difficulties.

While building his institution, he continued advancing academically. He later obtained a PhD in Physiology from the University of Buea, focusing his research on occupational health and the wellbeing of healthcare workers.
During his doctoral defense, professors from diverse academic backgrounds reportedly engaged passionately with his research topic, recognizing the importance of protecting the health of healthcare professionals themselves. The presentation left many convinced about the urgent need to pay greater attention to the welfare and working conditions of health workers.

Beyond administration and research, Dr. Meh lectures in several private higher institutions and also assists in state universities, sharing knowledge and mentoring students across Cameroon. He is equally the founder of the African Forum for Research and Rehabilitation, further demonstrating his commitment to healthcare advancement and academic development.
As a researcher, he has published scientific papers and presented findings at international conferences, especially in the area of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and occupational health.

Dr. Meh is also an author. His book, I Am Victory: The Power of the Mind, reflects his personal story of overcoming adversity and turning challenges into purpose. Through the book and his life journey, he continues to inspire young people to believe in perseverance, discipline, faith, and vision.
Colleagues and students describe him as dedicated, family-oriented, and purpose-driven. His influence stretches beyond classrooms and institutions into community development and youth empowerment initiatives. As one of the supporters of MENYU activities for several years, he has remained connected to his roots in Menchum Division and committed to uplifting the next generation.

Today, Dr. Meh Basil Kum stands as a symbol of resilience and innovation in Cameroon — proof that even in difficult economic conditions, determination and vision can create lasting impact.

His story is not just about personal success. It is about building opportunities for others, transforming education, strengthening healthcare, and inspiring youths to become creators of change rather than victims of circumstance.
