Ngwele Market, Bonaberi Douala – On March 8, 2025, market women from Ngwele Market gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day, with the theme “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment.” The event was marked by short speeches, fanfare and a call to action for the government to support women in the market.
Yvette Anda, a designer and one of the oldest members of Ngwele Market, shared her experiences as a market woman. “Although our numbers are few, I hope that in the future, we will celebrate with many more women,” she said. “We face several challenges in the market, and I don’t think they are being adequately addressed. The government needs to recognize the importance of Ngwele Market and provide us with the necessary support.”
Anda emphasized the crucial role that market women play in providing for their families. “We provide for our children’s education, feeding, and other needs. I am proud to be a woman who contributes to the development of Ngwele Market.”

When asked how her work empowers her as a woman and supports her family, Anda replied, “My work as a designer helps me to survive and succeed. I am able to provide for my family’s needs and support my children’s education.”
Anda’s message to young girls was one of empowerment and independence. “Prioritize your work and education. As a woman, having something to do and being independent is crucial to success. Don’t rely on others to provide for you; instead, work hard and earn your own money.”
The event was attended by market women,Ngwele Market Administrators, and representatives from Douala Four Council. The celebration was marked by songs, dances, and a call to action for the government to support women in the market.
In a statement, the United Nations said, “International Women’s Day is a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. It is a day to celebrate the achievements of women and girls, and to recognize the work that still needs to be done to achieve a world where all women and girls have equal rights and opportunities.”
The celebration at Ngwele Market was proof to the strength and resilience of market women in Cameroon. Despite the challenges they face, they remain determined to succeed and provide for their families.
As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, the market women of Mwele Market remind us of the importance of empowering women and girls, and recognizing the crucial role they play in their communities.
