Irish tactician Jonathan McKinstry has been appointed the new head coach of the Gambia’s national football team, taking over from Tom Saintfiet, who resigned after Gambia’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
He is currently managing Gor Mahia FC in Kenya and will assume his role as head coach of the Scorpions on June 1, 2024.
The Irish coach has been tasked primarily to qualify the team for the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 World Cup.
McKinstry’s successful stay at Gor Mahia saw the club regain its competitive edge. Under his guidance, they secured consecutive titles.
Before moving to Kenya, he achieved a 67% win rate as Uganda’s national team coach, including victory in the 2019 CECAFA Challenge Cup. He has also managed Sierra Leone, Rwanda, and Bangladesh Premier League club Saif SC.
The Gambia, drawn in Group F, will face Seychelles on June 3 and travel to Gabon to face the host on June 10 for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
