Match-day 9 of the MTN elite one relegation battle has commenced with three games staged this Tuesday, April 23rd, pulling last minute surprises in their quest for maintenance in the top flight championship next football season. Of the three games played, Astre of Douala, UMS of Loum and PWD of Bamenda recorded victories.
The Abakwa boys picked up a 2-1 win over AS Fortuna to go second on the classification table with 14 points, just 1point away from Leaders Fortuna who though lost the game, remained temporarily in charge.
Ten man Union Sportive of Douala lost to struggling UMS of Loum 1-2, pushing Union who used to lead the race, to now the 4th position with 13points, level on points with third place Astre. Astre football club of Douala outsmarted bottom place Fovu of Baham 4-3, thanks to a hat trick from Jules Armand Kooh and Fogue. In just 27 minutes, Jules scored three goals to give Astre a 3-2 lead over Fovu before the break, making it goal number 20 for the striker who is currently the League’s top scorer. Fovu only has 5 points from one win and two draws. They’ve lost five matches in the relegation playoffs. Two more games to go before their fates are decided but as it stands, Fovu will need to win the last two games to hope for maintenance though they have a very slim chance. It should be noted that, at the end of the relegation battle, five teams will be dropped to Elite two and six maintained.
Following results produced on the first three games of the 9th day, Fovu, Avion of Douala, Apejes of Mfou, Aigle Royal of the Menoua, and UMS of Loum are currently in the red zone. The rest of day nine matches have been programmed to take place this Wednesday in Yaoundé.
