Residents of Dibombari joined millions of Cameroonians across the country on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, to celebrate the 54th edition of Cameroon’s National Day, also known as National Unity Day, in an atmosphere marked by patriotism, diversity, and communal harmony.
The colorful celebration brought together administrative authorities, political leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, students, and residents of the subdivision in a grand display of national pride and togetherness.
Festivities officially began with the arrival of top dignitaries, including the Mayor of Dibombari, Justin Bejedi Ndamè, and the Divisional Officer of Dibombari, Jean-Philippe Ngo’o Mebe, who were warmly received at the ceremonial grounds. The national anthem was rendered with enthusiasm as citizens stood united beneath the green, red, and yellow flag of Cameroon.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was the awarding of medals and distinctions to outstanding citizens recognized for their dedication and service to the community and the nation.
The event then moved into the traditional march past, which featured an impressive parade by paramilitary groups, nursery, primary and secondary school students, political parties, civil society organizations, youth associations, and traditional cultural groups. The disciplined and colorful displays drew applause from spectators who lined the ceremonial square.
This year’s celebration strongly reflected the spirit of coexistence and solidarity among the people of Dibombari — a municipality known for hosting citizens from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, including many internally displaced persons from Cameroon’s North West and South West regions affected by the ongoing socio-political crisis.
The participation of both Anglophone and Francophone communities highlighted the importance of peaceful living, tolerance, and national integration in strengthening the social fabric of the municipality.
The 2026 National Day was celebrated under the theme: “National Unity: Backbone of our Defense System, Bedrock of Cameroon’s Development.” The theme, set by Paul Biya, emphasized the close relationship between the Cameroonian people and the nation’s defense and security forces, while promoting resilience, patriotism, and national cohesion.
National Unity Day remains one of Cameroon’s most important public holidays. Observed every May 20, it commemorates the historic 1972 referendum during which Cameroonians voted to move from a federal system to a united state, laying the foundation for the country’s modern national identity.
For many residents in Dibombari, this year’s celebration was more than a ceremonial gathering — it was a powerful reminder that unity, peace, and mutual understanding remain essential pillars for Cameroon’s growth and stability.
