The semi finals of the UEFA champions league has come and gone with the two finalists being Real Madrid of Spain and Borussia Dortmund of Germany.
It was a long evening for Cameroon International Eric Maxim Choupo Moting whose side, Bayern Munich, was outsmarted and eliminated from the semi final of the competition on a 4-3 aggregate score line by Real Madrid, record winners (14) winners of the competition.
In the 85th minute, Coach Thomas Tuchel replaced prolific England striker Harry Kane with Choupo-Moting.
His contributions were insufficient as Bayern Munich carelessly succumbed to a 2-1 loss after Joselu came off the bench to score a late brace, canceling Alphonso Davies’ lead that was on the verge of giving Bayern a possible ticket to the final.
Manuel Neuer’s impact in this Champions League run might not have been as dramatic, but for 87 minutes in the Bernabeu stadium he was absolutely exceptional. The goalkeeper/captain heroics however failed to help his side progress to the next phase of the competition.
Bayern Munich will thus end the 2023-24 season trophy-less, for the first time since 2011-12. This ends the hopes of an all German clash at the final.
Real Madrid have now eliminated Bayern Munich seven times in the Champions League, the most a club has been eliminated by a single opponent in knockout ties in the competition and this will be their 18th champions league final
On the other hand, Kylian Mbappe and PSG tried their hardest but a determined Borussia Dortmund side saw them off in the second leg in Paris.
Borussia Dortmund reached the Champions League final for the third time after 1996-97, when they won and 2012-13, when they lost against league rivals Bayern Munich. Incidentally, their last appearance in the final 11 years ago also came at Wembley.
As it stands now, the UEFA Champions League 2023-24 final is set and London will host 14 time winners Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund on June 1st 2024.
