In an exclusive interview with knnews.info, celebrated Cameroonian artist Franck Epalle shared his insights on the significance of cultural music in preserving Cameroon’s rich tradition and values. With over 22 years of experience in the music industry, Franck Epalle has established himself as a leading figure in promoting Cameroonian culture through music.
Born in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, precisely from Donga Mantum division, Franck Epalle began his music career in 1998 after arriving in Douala. He joined a cabaret dance group, where he worked with famous musicians like Salle John,Afo Akom, Lady Kashilla (Congolese artist and sound engineer) just to mention a few.
Franck Epalle started interpreting music from the grass field and collaborated with other artists from the region.
In 2003, Franck Epalle began recording his own songs with Dina Michou Studio. With over two decades of experience in the music industry, Franck Epalle has become a household name in Cameroon, known for his unique blend of traditional and modern music.
During the interview, Franck Epalle emphasized the importance of incorporating traditional Cameroonian elements into music. He noted that cultural music has the power to unite people and promote a sense of national identity. Franck Epalle also highlighted the challenges faced by Cameroonian artists in promoting cultural music, citing the dominance of Western music and the lack of support for local artists.
“I started my career singing makossa and Afro music, but later realized the importance of projecting my cultural heritage,” Franck Epalle explained. “I believe it is essential for us to promote our culture and language, especially in a country with over 200 languages.”
Franck Epalle also discussed the significance of language in cultural music. “Music is a universal language, but singing in one’s mother tongue is a powerful means of expressing cultural identity and promoting national pride,” he said.
As a musician and cultural ambassador, Franck Epalle uses his music to address social issues affecting Cameroonians. He has songs about the Anglophone crisis and other societal ills, using his music as a platform to promote peace and unity.
Franck Epalle recalled a powerful moment when his music touched the heart of a fan from his village. “I was invited to perform at the grandstand in Nkambé , where I sang about the importance of developing our village and preserving our cultural heritage,” he said. “A fan from my village was deeply moved by my music, and it was a powerful moment for me.”
Looking to the future, Franck Epalle is optimistic about the prospects of cultural music in Cameroon. “Cultural music is dominating the airwaves in Cameroon, and I believe it will continue to play a vital role in promoting our cultural heritage and national identity,” he said.
As Franck Epalle prepares to release his new song titled “Baltaza“, fans can expect another masterpiece that celebrates Cameroon’s rich cultural heritage. With his music, Epalle continues to promote the values of cultural awareness, tradition, and identity, inspiring a new generation of Cameroonians to take pride in their heritage.
