Cyprian- “Nyandoh potato” is a Cameroonian veteran comedian and actor who hails from Ngie land, in the North West Region of Cameroon.
Born on May 5th, 1979 in kumba, the veteran comedian attended basic education in Pendamboko, before switching to GSS muyuka.
Famous for his comic radio programs in the late 90s and early 2000s, Cyprian Egomang Tayong adopted the stage name CY international to create a brand for himself across the South West, North West and even the Littoral regions of Cameroon, with the likes of willy de Paris in his ranks. He has featured in a host of comedy and movies amongst which is :Wandafool, a 25mins shooting that featured Soli Egbe inspired the very cultural ascent of our middle aged grandparents.
In recent times, his propagation for the popular slogan 80:20, has sparked controversy amongst anglophone entertainers in the Cameroon entertainment industry, with a handful of English speaking Cameroonians bullying him for his outrageous love for the concept of “Support Your Own”.
His steadfastness and consistency on social media during the past 4 years has further frustrated Cameroon event organisers who
traded culture for their personal gains, as huge sums of money were being disbursed to foreign artists, as against peanut for home base artists. Social media soldiers, and entertainers who for many years had been benefiting from the encouragement for the lack of home base support have termed the now 80:20 campaign as ‘xenophobic’ against Nigerians and named the 80:20 boss as an “illiterate”.
Unfortunately, the term ‘illiteracy’ has been misused and limited to mean ” someone who cannot read and write” whereas it’s a term that can also be extended to mean “someone who has no knowledge about a particular thing”. The second definition means that, even those who fight against the 80:20 campaign can and should be seen as illiterates because they have no knowledge about the value of culture and preservation of one’s identity.
Most Musicians and entertainers in Cameroon who are the primary beneficiary to this campaign have shown very little interest to foster the implantation of this concept in the minds of Cameroonians.
In the corridors, they appreciate his concept but in public they bite their lips, for complexity reasons and by extension for fear of creating tension with the timid fan-base of non- Cameroonian origin.
In the past months, CY international has been urging Djs to impose a tariff on musicians before advertising their songs during parties and gatherings.
The declaration vividly tipped artists to cry foul play, insisting that , CY international is intending to slow down the consumption of their craft in Cameroon.
This only shows how cony the Cameroon entertainment industry is
