In a stunning upset, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) defeated Cameroon 1-0 in the African World Cup playoff semi-final on Thursday in Rabat, Morocco. Chancel Mbemba’s dramatic stoppage-time goal sealed the win for the Leopards, ending Cameroon’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
The match was a tightly contested affair, with both teams creating chances but struggling to break the deadlock. Cameroon dominated possession, but DR Congo’s defense held firm, and Mbemba’s late strike proved decisive.
Cameroon, who have competed in eight previous World Cups, were unable to overcome injuries to key players, including Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa. Goalkeeper Andre Onana was also a doubt with an ankle injury.
DR Congo will now face Nigeria in the playoff final on Sunday, with a historic World Cup spot on the line. The winner will advance to the inter-confederation playoffs in March, competing for one of two available spots at the 2026 World Cup.
